Taronga Zoo Welcomes Baby Chimpanzee

Ms FELICITY WILSON (North Shore)

—Taronga Zoo Sydney recently welcomed a brand new member of the Taronga Zoo family, a healthy baby chimpanzee. Lisa the 43 year old chimpanzee gave birth to the female baby at the end of May, and the zoo's keepers have observed Lisa introducing the newborn to the larger chimpanzee community, which now consists of 21 individuals. Chimpanzee's are considered endangered, facing threats such as habitat loss, illegal wildlife trafficking, and hunting. I want to congratulate the Taronga Conservation Society for their collaboration with the Jane Goodall Institute, supporting conservation initiatives in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Primate Supervisor Richard Buzas is happy to report that Lisa is bonding well with the newborn holding her close and nursing her regularly. Congratulations to Lisa the Chimpanzee, and to Taronga Zoo and Taronga Conservation Society for all their efforts here in Australia and across the world for your continued devotion to conservation.
