Taronga Zoo Beating Plastic Pollution

Ms FELICITY WILSON (North Shore)

—As we all are aware, plastic waste is an incredibly challenging issue that causes detrimental damage on our environment, with an estimated five trillion pieces of plastic currently floating in our oceans. In efforts to combat this problem, Taronga Zoo is collaborating with NSW Government to reduce plastic pollution with its campaign, 'Litter Free Oceans'. I congratulate Taronga Zoo on their commitment and efforts to save wild animals that have been harmed by plastic litter. One story I want to bring attention to is Andrew, a green sea turtle that unfortunately ate a piece of litter and became stranded on one of Sydney's beaches. He was taken to Taronga Zoo's Wildlife Hospital and luckily made a full recovery. Because of how much plastic waste there is in our oceans, stories like this happen too often. It should not be something that our sealife has to endure. I commend Taronga Zoo and their efforts to bring awareness about our personal impacts on litter, helping to stop plastic pollution.
